It also has a sensor that will snap Roomba to its real-world location if it starts to drift away from its initial location.
iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that don't have bristles and therefore are more likely to avoid the tangles that previous models. These rollers are also taller and can fit under beds or couches that are low. They're designed to make this model more adaptable to different flooring types.
The Roomba 980 stands out from other models with a high-end price tag due to its latest dirt detection feature that makes use of cameras to detect embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous version which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around the room and clean everything at least three times from different angles.
In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. Its score on low pile carpet was excellent and it scored a good score on mid pile, too. It did a decent job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with very long and thick pet fur that was clumped together.
The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots in our list despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a top model but does not have all the fancy apps or smart home integrations you'll see in other top models.
The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is available for use right away. After you have removed the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you have to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to docking station when it is running out of battery or is full of trash. There are also indicator lights on top that show when its bin is empty, or when it needs to recharge, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
